'New Girl' finale: Zooey Deschanel on that crazy Jess-Nick wedding, and a loft-y goodbye
Like Sam and Diane, Ross and Rachel, and Blair and Chuck before them, the chemistry between the new girl and the snarky bartender has reached a steady simmer this past season. Between lingering glances over the bathroom sink and an almost kiss , the two have gotten shippers all sorts of frothy over their opposites-attract dynamic. If Jess and Nick do get together, will it ruin one of the best new comedies to hit prime time in recent memory? Those relationships were handed to Jess and she still biffed them. Her complaint? Paul was too ready for commitment gasp! Nick is in an ostensibly doomed fourth attempt at his relationship with Caroline, and Jess is still in rebound mode from her seven-year relationship. Add to that the fact that, though he can make a mean Manhattan by which I mean a red cup full of whiskey , Nick has not figured out what he wants to do with his life yet. Okay, so the kiss was hot. Although I was more intrigued by her brief interest in casual sex with Schmidt. Perhaps due to my young initiation into fan-fiction, I almost resent being told by the writers who we should be rooting for to bone when there may be another duo that has way better chemistry. A cute flirty friendship, yes, but OTP? No way. I bought it when they said they were friends who were attracted to each other. I loved that they made fun of each other and sort of found each other inexplicable, but were drawn to each other as friends. I like that their relationship was more complicated than just an attraction or romance. I was kind of bored by it, until it led to Nick jumping out the window of the loft. I love the threesome of Nick, Schmidt and Winston. I like them as friends. I like Nick being annoyed with Jess and Jess always trying to fix everything.

And for a brief second last night, it looked like Jess might actually do the same. It backed away. Remember last week, when Jess dumped the dreamy grown-up Russell for lack of passion, only to wind up back home in a scream-off with Nick? Again, there was a perfect pause, when the sexually tense squabblers should have made the time-honored move from insults to make-outs. Instead, they just shook their asses at each other, which sure, is technically sexual, but hardly a mating call. Nick, for his part, had a ready-made Love A-ha! Most important, if Jess and Nick do fall in love, or even fool around after a game of True American , New Girl would suddenly become a show about a relationship rather than a show about male-female friendships.
One of the most recognizable tenets of romantic comedies is the classic will-they-won't-they dynamic of a fan-favorite couple. Watching a relationship ping-pong between on-again and off-again only to end up together by the very end of a movie or television series is comforting and entertaining to watch. But it can also be a little predictable. The star at the center of New Girl has played Jess for over episodes, so no one is more of an expert on Jess and Nick's romantic history than Deschanel.
