A lcohol and online dating need each other like the internet needs porn. Tinder involves so much work: But a few drinks can very quickly paper over the fact you and Mr Red Pants have nothing in common, zero chemistry and that the only thing keeping the conversation going is the promise of being bought drinks and that someone else will pay for the cab home. A drop of self loathing and a brisk morning walk is how some of us finish our Tinder dates. Which is great on one hand, but shit on the other, as sobriety has eradicated my only form of exercise. Needless to say, this carefully laid plan did not result in getting me laid, much to my annoyance.

Part of my personality before I sopped drinking was I was a drinker, I believed that about myself.

After you stop drinking, that discomfort turns into comfort, and it starts to become a part of who you are. That brings me to the third thing, when you stop drinking alcohol, you all of a sudden start to become the person who is you. The real person who you are, once you get rid of all this extraneous behaviour, once you get rid of all the bullshit stopping you from being the person that you are, you become yourself.

Finally, I think one of the most important parts of this for me anyway, is I think it opens your eyes up to people around you more than ever before. Drinking alcohol is just such a selfish behaviour to do because the more you drink, the more into yourself you get, and the more selfish you become, and you become introverted. For me, I started finding the person I wanted to spending the rest of my life with with the person I was already with.

I think me quitting drinking just opened my eyes to a lot of other things that were already there in front of me. You can fall in love with so many different aspects of life that you thought were just drab and boring, like walking. Now I tend to own my decisions that are made with a fully sober mind. I am struggling a bit, but will keep going onwards and upwards.

Dating after quitting drinking: Stop worrying about taking the alcohol out of dating. When you understand the truth behind the smokescreen. Dating sober felt like a social experiment at times, a side effect I didn't expect when I quit booze. For years I was a die-hard partier, never.

Before I got sober, the idea of going on a date and not having several drinks was nonexistent. I still remember the initial feeling I had four years ago, when I finally made the decision to become sober. For me, a beer guzzling, sharp-tongued wild child, bidding adieu to alcohol was a shocking turn of events. Radical change is an adrenaline rush. But of course, nothing is ever that simple — happiness will never be the lowest hanging fruit. With my initial surge of conviction and determination, I imagined that taking away alcohol — my favorite vice — would make me feel whole. I thought when it was gone it would simply leave behind an unscathed version of who I was meant to be. But, the loss of drinking — though necessary — initially felt like just that: I mourned the loss of my inebriated identity.

My arms felt heavy in my lap and my brain felt sluggish.

For a decade, I had a really cushy job with a great salary, company car, and a company credit card, marketing a very hipster brand of beer. But as I've written about before, I was not happy with this version of my life or with a career in professionally boozing it up.

On my last milestone birthday, my best friend announced triumphantly that she had created a cake that captured my personality so perfectly that anyone seeing it would instantly know I was the one being celebrated. With a flourish, she handed me a glass of champagne and presented the cake. It was decorated like a bottle of gin. Yet something sharp and rusty poked through my tone. That was the day I realized something I had never admitted to myself. I went back through my photos and calendar from the previous year. Prosecco on the deck, craft beer festivals, yoga and wine class, Scotch tasting courses, happy hour with work pals, sangria with family, Prohibition cocktail parties—event after event with glasses held aloft. Yes, Giving Up Drinking Changed My Social Life—but for the Much, Much Better

It has been almost three years since I entered into recovery for my alcohol addiction, and two years since my last relapse. Sobriety hasn't been easy. I went to rehab, lived in a halfway house, went back to my old life without drinking and eventually relapsed, then moved back in with my parents in order to figure out my next step. The most surprising thing about my journey, however, has been meeting my partner — and the support I received from him when he decided to quit alcohol in order to support my recovery.
