Online Dating Etiquette: The Do’s and Don’ts of Messaging

LONDON — Manners are apparently the very backbone of British society, but, despite this, dating online can feel like it's full of people with bad manners and poor behaviour. Tongues out in profile pictures, unsolicited nudes and toilet humour are a few ways to render yourself an online dating pariah. At least for polite Brits. To get the lowdown on keeping those manners in ship shape, Mashable has consulted with Britain's foremost social arbiters and dating etiquette experts. How you present yourself in your profile can mean the difference between a left swipe or right. Photos are usually the first thing prospective matches look at, so choose carefully to avoid defeat. According to James Preece — author of the Dating Etiquette Guide — selfies are a real no-no when it comes to choosing your profile picture.

Dating expert Joanne Barnett recommends uploading three up-to-date photos of you out and about. Meanwhile, Sophia Money-Coutts, resident social arbiter and features director at Tatler , says that women shouldn't post photos of them with face paint. Money-Coutts has noticed a number of men posting photos with babies on dating apps.

Money-Coutts isn't convinced about all the people on Happn who seem to work for Goldman Sachs. She advises caution. They're probably all freelance writers, not bankers. Once you've matched with someone, it's hard to get the balance right during that initial messaging period. Here's how to you show interest without appearing too keen, or — heaven forbid — rude. And, definitely no dick pics or nudes. Keep it tucked away; we don't want to see it yet.

Barnett says money, ill health, politics, problems and sex are all conversation topics that should be avoided. Grant Harrold, a former royal butler for Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall, believes you should refrain from asking anything private or personal. Congratulations, you've managed to hold your matches attention and you've secured a date. Now it's time to make a real impression, but make sure it's for all the right reasons.

Don't drink too much, or too little. According to Debretts getting drunk is 'socially unattractive' and "can turn social bonhomie into maudlin introspection". On the other hand, the guide says complete abstinence can seem "rude, anti-social and holier-than-thou". Have a tipple or two, but don't go overboard. There's nothing worse that flaking at the last minute or being very late for no good reason.

Preece believes that you shouldn't just be polite to your date. Be polite to waiters and bar staff too. Ramphal recommends switching off your phone during a date. We're using cookies to improve your experience. Click Here to find out more. Entertainment Like Follow.

Dating is really just a string of dicey etiquette questions, but how do you talk to the person you're dating about the other people you're dating? Do I disclose at all? How do I divvy up my time?
