Destiny needs matchmaking

With the imminent reveal of Destiny 2: Forsaken, it feels like we might finally be on the cusp of a huge and crucially, positive watershed moment. Between a community summit at the studio, a well-received, empowering sandbox update, and the generally rather good Warmind expansion, Destiny 2 has lately felt like a game starting to regain its identity. And now Bungie is ready to unveil Year Two, just ahead of previewing its large-scale, September, Forsaken expansion as one of the biggest E3 games.

But when Bungie revealed that Destiny 2 skill-based matchmaking was bugged, they never said if there were any plans to fix it. On the one hand, keeping skill-based matchmaking off gives players the opportunity to enjoy Crucible with a little more freedom. Additionally, more skilled Destiny 2 PvP players can group up with their less-skilled friends and everyone can enjoy the experience. With skill-based matchmaking, that less-skilled friend would have to face opponents that are out of their league.

The general feeling among anti-SBMM players is that turning the feature off makes Crucible the way it should be. On its face, this seems like the preferred solution for PvP, even if it is limited to the Quickplay playlist. Since competitive needs to match similar skill players it makes sense to have SBMM turned on for that playlist, but Quickplay should be more casual. The counterpoint to leaving SBMM off is that it can negatively impact those less-skilled players that group with teammates of similar skill or run solo.

There is always another side to every coin. They are seeing the downside to skill-based matchmaking being bugged, and in turn, their experience is not as fun. They feel like the top tier players only want SBMM off because it boosts their ego. Ultimately, Bungie has a lot of discussing to do internally and hopefully, with its community. No question the discovery that skill-based matchmaking is off has boosted interest in Crucible and made it more enjoyable for many.

I know this is a very common thread on Reddit atm, but seriously Bungie. Please do something about your matchmaking system. I'm from. Every activity in Destiny needs some form of matchmaking, and I'd argue that it's the single biggest limiting factor holding back the game from.

How to do matchmaking on destiny beta job

The release of Destiny 2: Forsaken will bring about some key changes to matchmaking — including Guided Games — as well as a shakeup to the clan rewards structure. This week, Destiny 2 developer Bungie gave players their first look at the new Crucible ranking system coming with the May 8th update. However, while the addition of ranks to Crucible play is a great step towards incentivizing PvP fans to keep coming back, it also highlights a major flaw with Destiny 2 at present. Valor ranks earned via the casual playlist are a non-issue because there is no penalty for losing as players rank up, but Glory rank earned via the competitive playlist is influenced by wins and losses. The more games a player wins, the higher their Glory rank in the Competitive playlist, and any losses will take away from that rank. Unfortunately, some will struggle to increase their Glory rank not because they are bad at Crucible, but because of the perils of solo matchmaking in Destiny 2. Solo matchmaking in Destiny 2 is a huge point of contention in the community, and has been for a while.

Trials never had matchmaking. The Nightfall does not have matchmaking. Larger, endgame public events like Escalation Protocol and Blind Well do not have matchmaking. I have seen a lot of reactions from players determined that Forge failures reinforce the fact that endgame matchmaking should not exist. You have people AFKing, you have people doing the activity way under-leveled.

For anyone game with online features, one of the most important parts is matching players up with other players. If you can't do that, then you might as well not even have a multiplayer component. Yet every year we see AAA titles release that fail to adequately master this part of the equation. You could really only get into a matchmaking queue for strikes and the Crucible. Everything else in the game required you to go onto one of the "looking-for-group" websites or apps and roll the dice. While fans banding together to support a title is commendable, it's not okay that much of the time this was the only way to actually play the game.
