During mild winter weather, the heat pump provides all the heating, which is more efficient than a gas furnace in such cases. The furnace takes over only when the temperature drops below about 40 degrees Fahrenheit, where heat pumps become much less efficient for heating. The installation costs for the hybrid system are less than the combination of a forced-air furnace and an air conditioner because you use the heat pump for cooling during the summer, if it reversible.
Absorption heat pumps are relatively new to the residential HVAC market, but they have been used in commercial and industrial buildings for a long time. Instead of using standard refrigerant, the absorption heat pump uses a mixture of ammonia and water, which is heated by natural gas to provide heating during the winter.
