Dating a full time single dad

When a dad is single and has children—whether as a full-time dad or sharing custody— dating can be a particular challenge. Before he had children, defining the ideal girlfriend might have been more about her having fun, being playful, being really cute and attractive, and being a good friend. But once children are in the picture, a man needs to look for more than just those things. The important character traits in a potential companion have new meaning when the single dad takes into account the potential of a relationship that involves his children. So, what kinds of traits should a single dad look for in a companion that will be attractive to him and a positive for his children?

Despair and Loneliness self. I love my girls more than anything in the world. Me and my children had our lives turned upside down and have since rebuilt. I have not dated for two years to fully focus on this transition. Now we are stable and i'm considering dating but online experiences are fruitless. I feel like nobody is going to want to date a full time dad with 3 kids. Maybe its just not my time and I need to accept that.

If thats the case I just feel despair. I'm 41 and not getting younger. I know many single mothers who will only date single fathers because they understand the commitment. Being devoted to your children will usually make an impressive impact on most women. At least from my experience. It was hard for me to get back out there; my ex crushed me when she left me. It takes time, but at least put your hand in the game. You never know whom you may meet! I know that feeling. I was not attempting to date but certainly wanted someone in my life that wanted to eventually share our lives.

We hit it off nicely and all of the talk has been about leading up to my long term hopes. But before I met her, I felt exactly as you described. Amazingly, she fits all of that criteria. Good luck. Single Dad 44 with 3 kids here too fulltime- I waited about 1 year before I jumped in and it may have been a little early TBH. If you live in a populated area, then you should have no problems finding dates or companionship. I do OLD and have pretty good success finding like minded women.

I have sole custody of my daughters and after about two years I met an amazing woman on a dating app. I had virtually given up on the online dating apps because of the women I met on there. It's been four years and I still think I'm the luckiest guy in the world. I got divorced kept the kids and everything, then I find an amazing woman. Life is good. There are women out there that would love a devoted father. Keep your chin up, be confident and you'll find the right one.

I'm in a similar situation. I don't like online dating. Tried it, been on a few dates, really no connection with anybody. I get a ton of attention when I'm out and about with my boys though. In my experience women and mom's especially love a dad taking care of his kids. Try to go to more family oriented events with your kids and try to meet people that way.

I hear you man. Single dad of two boys and a girl. I too have given up on dating. When speaking to women as soon as I mention I'm a single dad they ghost me. Had one tell me to give them to the mom if I wanted to date her. I think they believe that being a single dad means that we will have no time or love for them and I get that. My kids come first and can be a handful especially as the two boys have a behavioural condition and the other has F.

Keep trucking along and you'll eventually find the "one" somewhere. All you can do is be optimistic. I understand where you're at, but have a different perspective. The thought of having a new woman come into our life is very appealing, until I realize what that would really look like. If being single causes you despair then you're definitely not ready to date and come off as needy. My suggestion, focus on what you can control, namely yourself.

Do whatever it takes to develop your own life that makes you happy without needing anyone else. Exercise, outdoor activities, education, etc. A relationship is NOT the be all, end all you're making it out to be. Stop putting women and relationships on a pedestal! They bring their own hardships and will distract you from your girls.

What happens when you get close to someone and then she bolts? You'll be crushed and you will seek out another relationship to remove the memory of the old, only problem is in the meantime you've done nothing to build yourself up as the "catch". There are far, far worse things than being single, such as obsessively chasing validation from other people. It's hard as hell to feel you're doing this all on your own and the loneliness can be absolutely miserable.

Heck, even my good friends have distanced themselves from me like they might catch divorce, but that just makes me more resolute to build my life for none but my girls and me. If at some point a lady fits into our life, that would be terrific. But I won't feel any despair. I'm a great dad and a really good man. Either some woman will see that and things will happen naturally, or I'll be fine doing the things I love and raising two amazing girls on my own.

I've made some of the best friends I've ever had. Highly recommended. Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy. All rights reserved. Want to join?
